Second Hawaii Workshop on

Parallel Algorithms and Data Structures

University of Hawaii at Manoa

December 9-13, 2019

Location

The workshop will take place in the KOI Room (ground floor) of the Imin International Conference Center. The venue is located at 1777 East-West Road, Honolulu HI, 96822, in the center of the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. Look for signs directing to “AlgoPARC Workshop”.

Food

Continental breakfast, lunches and coffee/tea will be provided during the workshop. The participants are on their own for dinners.

Accommodations

The participants are expected to book their own accommodations. This year there will be no workshop-negotiated rates for hotels. Online hotel booking services, such as Hotels.com or Booking.com offer a variety of hotel options in the Waikiki district of Honolulu, close to the beach. There are also a number of AirBnB listings for Honolulu.

If the cost of lodging is an issue, we are hoping to reserve a number of (dormitory-style) rooms at the Campus Conference Housing on-campus. Please visit this page later for more details as they become available. Update: Unfortunately, due to strong demand no Campus Conference Housing rooms are available this year. If the cost of lodging is an issue, the participants are encouranged to arrange shared accomodations among themselves.

Transportation

Waikiki district (where majority of hotels are located) is about 10 miles away from the Honolulu Airport and about 2-3 miles away from campus.

Car Rental

There are several car rental agencies available at the Honolulu Airport and in Waikiki. However, parking is very expensive and limited both in Waikiki and on campus. Therefore, driving a car is not really recommended for commuting to campus. However, if you are planning to stay extra days to explore the island, a rental car is definitely the most convenient way to get around. Do not keep valuables in your car, as rental cars are easy to spot and get broken into all the time.

Taxi, Uber & Lyft

Taxi and ride sharing companies, such as Uber and Lyft, are very popular in Honolulu. A taxi from the airport to Waikiki will cost around $30-35 and from Waikiki to campus will cost around $15-20. If you share a ride with 2-3 colleagues, this can be a very affordable option.

The Bus

The Honolulu bus system, TheBus, has an extensive network. A single ride costs $2.75 and can be paid directly to the driver in cash. No credit cards are accepted and no change is given, so make sure you have the exact fare in cash. One-day passes may be purchased from the driver for $5.50 and are valid for unlimited rides from midnight till 3am the following day. Bus transfers are not included in the single-ride ticket. If transfer is needed, it is recommended to purchase the one-day pass. For more information and to view the bus schedule visit www.thebus.org. If you are planning to use the bus, consider DaBus2 mobile app on your smartphone. It provides real-time tracking via GPS of individual buses.
