First Hawaii Workshop on

Parallel Algorithms and Data Structures

University of Hawaii at Manoa

December 4-8, 2017

Location

The workshop will take place in UH iLab (building 37) on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus. Look for signs directing to “AlgoPARC Workshop” along the marked route below and from TheBus 13 stop “Dole St + Lower Campus Rd”.

Food

Continental breakfast, lunches and coffee/tea will be provided during the workshop. Refer to the Schedule for times. The participants are on their own for dinners.

Accommodations

The participants are expected to book their own accommodations. Most hotels in Honolulu are located in Waikiki near the beach. We managed to negotiate special rates for the participants of the workshop at two hotels listed below. To take advantage of the special rates, the reservation must be made before November 2, 2017. Once booked, the reservations are fully refundable with 3 days advanced notice. If you decide to arrive earlier or depart later, the same rate can be used for stays between November 29 – December 13, 2017, but is subject to availability. Keep in mind that Honolulu Marathon takes place on December 10. So plan your trip accordingly and book your flights and rooms early.

There is also an option of staying on-campus at the Campus Conference Housing. It is significantly cheaper, and is within a walking distance from the conference venue. Keep in mind that this option requires a purchase of a campus meal plan of at least 2 meals per person per day. Although continental breakfast and lunch will be provided at the workshop, there are very few other options for dinner on-campus. So if you are staying on-campus, you might be using the meal plan for at least one meal per the day.

Courtyard Waikiki Beach Hotel

A block of 30 rooms are being held until November 2, 2017 at Courtyard Waikiki Beach Hotel located at 400 Royal Hawaiian Ave, Honolulu HI 96815. The hotel has two types of rooms available at the special rate:

The rate includes in-room wireless internet, in-room safe, coffee and tea, access to a fitness center and a pool. Valet parking is available at discounted rate of $25 (Regular rate is $39). The tax rate is 13.962% (4.712% Hawaii State Excise Tax + 9.25% Hotel Room Tax).

To take advantage of the special rate, book the rooms at this link before November 2, 2017.

Campus Conference Housing

A limited number of UH Manoa Conference Housing options are also available. The accommodations are located in the Frear Hall and are on first come, first serve basis. These accommodations are located on campus and are within walking distance from iLab (the workshop venue).

The following options are available (Note, options 1 & 2 below share a bathroom with up to 4 people in the unit):

Note: In addition to the cost of the room per night, there is an additional (refundable) charge of $25 for security deposit for each person and a requirement to purchase campus meal-plan for each guest. The meal plan options include 2 meals per day at $22/day or 3 meals per day at $27.50/day. For example, if you book 6 nights of accommodations, you have to purchase at least 12 meals for a total of $264. These meals can be used at cafeteria during regular opening hours starting from the time of check-in until check-out. (Note, breakfast and lunches will be provided at the workshop, so technically you do not need so many meals, but unfortunately, there is no way of reducing the number of required meals below 2 per day).

To apply for on-campus housing, fill out this form and send it to the Conference Housing Office by email at uhmconf@hawaii.edu. The Conference Housing Office will then contact you with information on how to pay for the accommodation. Take a look at an example of how to fill out the middle section of the form. The form is designed for group reservations; since you are booking just for yourself, write “1” under “Total number of people in residence” and under “The number of bedrooms required” fields.

Additional details about Campus Conference Housing can be found on University of Hawaii at Manoa Conference Housing website. If you have any questions about Campus Conference Housing, they can be contacted at uhmconf@hawaii.edu and are typically very responsive.

Transportation

Waikiki district is located about 8 miles from the Honolulu Airport and about 3-5 miles away from campus.

Car Rental

There are several car rental agencies available at the Honolulu Airport and in Waikiki. However, parking is very expensive and limited both in Waikiki and on campus. Therefore, driving a car is not really recommended for commuting to campus. However, if you are planning to stay extra days to explore the island, a rental car is definitely the most convenient way to get around. Do not keep valuables in your car, as rental cars are easy to spot and get broken into all the time.

Taxi, Uber & Lyft

Taxi and ride sharing companies, such as Uber and Lyft, are very popular in Honolulu. A taxi from the airport to Waikiki will cost around $30-35 and from Waikiki to campus will cost around $15-20. If you share a ride with 2-3 colleagues, this can be a very affordable option.

The Bus

The Honolulu bus system, TheBus, has an extensive network. A single ride costs $2.50 and can be paid directly to the driver in cash. No credit cards are accepted and no change is given, so make sure you have the exact fare in cash. One-day passes may be purchased from the driver for $5 and are valid for unlimited rides from midnight till 3am the following day. Starting from October 1, 2017, there are no more free transfers on the $2.50 fare. If transfer is needed, you should purchase the one-day pass. For more information and to view the bus schedule visit www.thebus.org. If you are planning to use the bus, consider DaBus2 mobile app on your smartphone. It provides real-time tracking via GPS of individual buses.
